UTI and antibiotics not helping

maddysmom Nov 29, 2006 10:17 PM

My 5-month-old puppy has a UTI. She was given amoxicillin first and it wasn't helping so they gave us Baytril. She threw up on that so they gave us Clavamox. She's been on it for 6 days and it doesn't seem like it is helping either. She is going out about 8-10 times a day still. I am considering trying d-mannose but I don't know how much to give or for how long. Or is there something else I should try?
I am about at my wits end. I have to admit I am getting really annoyed at having to take her out so much but I think it is more the fact that I'm worried the antibiotics aren't working and I don't know what to do next.
Thank you.

The antibiotics are not working for her UTI. Use 1/4 tsp of the d-mannose in her food twice a day, as well as homeopathic Cantharis 30c twice a day. This should be cleared up in 3 or 4 days.

Thank you for your reply. I give her dry food and she doesn't always eat at a certain time or all at once. I've heard they will like it up just plain because it is a little sweet. Would this work instead? I have been giving her a tsp of yogurt twice a day to put back some of the good bacteria that the antibiotics are killing. Can I mix it with the yogurt? And do I discontinue use after 3 or 4 days or lower the dosage and continue for a while?
Thanks so much!

I forgot to mention, she is only 5.3 pounds. I don't know if this makes a difference in the dosage.

For her size, 1/8 tsp d-mannose twice a day would be sufficient, mixed with a small amount of hamburger, cream cheese, moist dog food, or yogurt, whichever she will eat right away. Don't just sprinkle it on the dry food, for she may not eat it and you cant be sure of the timing even if she does.

Do I quit giving it to her after 3-4 days or do I taper off for a few days?
Thank you.

When the symptoms are gone, just stop the Cantharis. You can continue the d-mannose for a day or two more, then stop that as well.

Well, I was giving the d-mannose (didn't have the cantharis)and the sypmptoms were a little better but not much after 4 days. She was due for another urinalysis yesterday and they have now found crystals and some white blood cells, which I believe is how they know there is infection, right? The vet put her on a special diet of Hills S/D food for at least 30 days with absolutely nothing else, no treats, rawhides, pigs' ears, or anything and another antibiotic. What is your opinion of continuing to give her the d-mannose? Should I just follow the vet's instructions so I know if the diet and new antibiotic are working that it is just that and not that I gave her something I shouldn't have? I know if I gave her this and she didn't get better I would think it was because of that. Do you know what I mean?
Thanks so much for your time.
