violator Oct 10, 2003 01:47 AM

i found this snake at work today, it was a garter snake but i havent ever seen one like it. It had the typical yello stripe down the back but everything else but its head was a light lime green. Yeah i am sure it was a garter snake just not sure what kind or if its some mutant, any ideas?
Sorry dont have a camera at work, thought about keeping it but he had some bad scars on his side and back, must of been hit by lawn mower some time.
well let me know what you think.

In light of the fact that Thamnophis is found in every state in the Union & parts of Canada as well, knowing where it was found would go a long way toward getting the snake identified.

Thamnophis sirtalis is highly variable. You propably have a T s. sirtalis on your hands (Eastern Garter), a wide spread snake that may exhibit colors a few hues from the norm. I actually found one that had beautiful lime, almost floresent green stripes on a black ground color with a similar green between the scales and in place of what is usually yellowish on its head. It looked considerably different from a "textbook" Eastern garter but was pretty none the less. So I guess what I'm trying to say is you probably found a color variant of Thamnophis sirtalis (spp).

I once found a completely stripeless, with a lime green color and the typical checkered pattern.
