Does my cat stand a chance

Legit84 Dec 10, 2006 12:43 AM

My family just got a Siberian Husky today. He's 1 1/2 years old. The family we got this dog from could not keep it anymore because they felt it needed more attention. They had two older German Sheppards that my Siberian Husky was with all the time, and no cats.

When we introduced the cat and dog to each other today, at first there was no hyper activity, but then about 5 minutes went by and that's when they started to get agressive toward each other. It seemed like it was my cat that was attacking my Husky more then it was him attacking the cat. Anyways Baron (The Husky)started to get really excited and was going after the cat pretty good. I Settled him down, and since then the two of them have gotten along somewhat. He's walked right next to it down the hallway with no problems, And like right now, I turn around and the cat is sniffing the dogs tail while the dog is sleeping.

Is there hope for this relationship to work between these two?

I went through the same thing when I introduced our new husky to the family. Within a week or so - they just started to ignore each other. Last night I caught Lexi, my husky, licking the cat and he just laid there and let her! It was the cutest thing. So yes, there is hope!!!

Siberian Huskies do have a strong tendency to kill cats. Don't leave them alone together.

Most husky rescues will tell you that any sibe is a danger to a cat, just because 3/4 or more of them are cat killers, some right away, some later on, some just play with them so rough that the cat stands no chance. Ive heard of the vet bills from surviving cats that lived with adopted sibe adults that did not grow up with cats, it always happened with no one home (the sibe was just being playful). Smashed paws, shattered claws, broken legs, etc. Its just instinct with them, its 30,000 years of carefully bred survival instinct.
I have a sibe that was raised with cats, in a pack of sibes that have spent their entire life around cats, so it wasnt too diffiicult to introduce them, it just took time before they got along.
Be very careful, dont leave them alone together. Not unless the husky was raised from birth with cats.
