Maddy's UTI no improvement

maddysmom Dec 11, 2006 02:50 PM

In reference to previous posts about Maddy, my 5-month-old puppy with a UTI: I was giving the d-mannose (didn't have the cantharis)and the sypmptoms were a little better but not much after 4 days. She was due for another urinalysis this past Thursday and they have now found crystals and some white blood cells, which I believe is how they know there is infection, right? The vet put her on a special diet of Hills S/D food for at least 30 days with absolutely nothing else, no treats, rawhides, pigs' ears, or anything and another antibiotic, clindomycin. I decided to continue the d-mannose and have, in fact, increased the dosage a bit. I have been giving her 1/8 tsp 5 times a day for 2-1/2 days now and I am not seeing any improvement. I am so worried about getting this resolved. She has been on antibiotics (3 different ones now) for over a month. I don't know what to do next.
Thanks so much for your time.

If the vet put her on s/d I assume he found stones in the bladder which he is trying to dissolve. I hope you are using the canned s/d. To dissolve the stones, you need to make the urine more dilute and more acidic. Adding salt and ascorbic acid will help to do this. And do keep up smallamounts of d-mannose.

Ok, thanks. I will keep up the d-mannose. The vet said she has crystals, struvite crystals. The food is canned. She is also on another antibiotic. Do have any idea why the infection doesn't seem to be responding? She had amoxicillin for 2 weeks, clavamox for 2 weeks and now clindomycin, which she's on day 4 of 14 and it still doesn't seem better. Do you think we will get rid of it?
Thanks again for your time and advice.

I assume there are bladderstones in which the bacteria are protected. Until the stones are gone, it is difficult to get rid of all the bacteria.
