Thining hair on sides

abukuchick Dec 12, 2006 03:25 PM

I have two six month old littermate boys. They have both been changing as they grow but I've noticed something new about Jack B. His coat has always been finer than Andre's, he feels smoother and the hair itself is thinner than his brother's. Lately it seems that his hair on his sides has been thinning out. His belly and throat are almost totally hairless but now it's creeping up higher and I can see the slight gaps in the hair. He doesn't have any allergies and is very healthy. I was just wondering if this was normal for a puppy his age. His brother's coat has been changing a little, but mainly in color (he was almost all white and is now covered with fawn ticking). Any thoughts on this? I think he'll be colder if this keeps up, at least they both have some clothes!

-Martha, Andre and Jack B

PS-Is there a difference between a "short hair" and a "smooth coat"? If so, I'd say that I have one of each!

Sorry I don't have an answer for that. Have you checked with a vet or other breeders? Might want to post your question to the vet board. http://forums.doghobbyist.com/forum.php?catid=21

Your vet needs to see this.

It's not really that bad, I don't think. I was looking more and some of the spots that are hairless are healing from puppy battles, they're just more pronounced since his hair thins out on his tummy. He's always had the finer hair, almost like an IG. I'll still talk to the vet though.

It might be demodex mites. They cause the hair to thin out. My chihuahua's hair starting thinning on her head and it turned out to be demodectic mange. All dogs have these mites but smaller dogs get affected by them because they generally have weaker immune systems. Let me know how it turns out.
