spca rescue with diarhea and vomiting

carmeny Dec 16, 2006 04:55 PM

I am fostering 2 spca dogs that were seized with 19 others. The first day went well and the second day Emma (1-2 year old jack russell) had diarhea and some vomiting. Today there was some blood in the one dose of diarhea. She is drinking water but doesn't have much interest in food. She did receive a vaccine before we left the spca 2 days ago. I immediately thought parvo. I phoned a vet (an hour away) and she said to keep an eye on her over the weekend that it might just be adjusting to new house, new food or got into something. I have also been in contact with spca who said the same thing. Should I just let her drink and take away food for a day or so, or is there something I can feed her that is easy on the tummy. I cooked up some chicken and oatmeal. Could it be something else other than parvo?

If it worsens in the next 24 - 48 hours i will take her to the vet that is an hour away.

A little more updated information. It is Sunday and her appetite is really good, she is drinking alot of water. She did vomit a little in her kennel overnight - just a small amount and appeared clear and watery. She still has diarrhea with no blood at all - just had blood that one time. She is eating chicken and oatmeal and bottled water. She is very active and playful - not lethargic at all. She is however straining to pee a little - she squats for about 30 seconds to a minute with just a little amount coming out. Someone on here suggested cranberry what do you think? Could the diarrhea be caused by the vaccination she received since she is very skinny and her immune system probably isn't that good?

My dogs' vaccinations are all up to date (June of 2006) are they in any danger?

If she is acting well, eating, and has no fever, in spite of the diarrhea, it is unlikely to be parvo. Don't try to make her eat. You can offer her some slippery elm bark in water to soothe the digestive tract. I would also try homeopathic Phosphorus 30c or Arsenicum album 30c, 3 times a day, until averything has normalized. Cranberry concentrate should help her urinate if this is due to a bladder infection, or give her d-mannose.

Hi - thank you. I took her to the vet today and she has Cochsidia and nothing showed in her urine test. But I think I still will try the cranberry as it can't hurt right. Thank you again for your advice and I don't think I will try to make her eat for a couple days until she is ready!
