Profit a breeder makes

zpdfj Dec 27, 2006 06:37 PM

I had recently emailed a guy on a public forum here in SD who was askng arond for a inexpensive bulldog. I tried to explain to this person that english bulldogs are not cheap dogs to own. I told him/her that even if they save money on the purchase price they are just not a good dog to own if they are using words like inexpensive or cheap due to the maintenance (vet bills).I Went on to attempt to defend the breeders that he/she feels are a little bit greedy for charging so much for their dogs, like 1-2 grand per dog. I told him/her that there is a lot of personal time and money and effort that goes in to producing a good dog, especially an AKC english bulldogge. Overhead such as c-sections, buying the breeding stock themselves, vaccinations , time (time=money), medicatins for any other random problems, dog food....etc I suspect that many people that charge 2 grand a dog, dont really make all that much money after you factor in overhead, maybe 2-3 grand. He claims more like 15 grand per litter. I think people get bent about the prices of dogges but dont really realize what goes into producing a good dog and the overhead of being a "good " breeder....
I would like to hear your opinions on this issue as far as profit, overhead and supposed greedy breeders

I would have to say that you did very well in explaining to this person the drawbacks at buying or trying to obtain a "cheap" dog. It doesn't really have to be limited to just the Bully breeds but all breeds in general. You also did an excellent job at trying to explain that a reputable breeder and by that I mean a breeder that is breeding to better the standard makes next to no profit when you factor in the time, expense and effort it takes to breed a quality dog. Sadly though, education is key to the general public and it is rare that these people take the time to educate themselves as they either view the reputable breeder as greedy or are just plain ignorant at doing their own research. I think you did very well.

I've read some statistics about other breeds and not even bulldogs that have breeders lose about $2000 a litter and that's probably conservative and taking into account only health checks, vet bills during and vet bills after the puppies are born. It doesn't even go into the extra food for mom and pups during the pregnancy, the gas prices to and from vet appointments, showing a dog to a championship, and complications that happen along the way, etc. Great breeders absolutely do not make money on any litter they produce even selling puppies for $1000 a piece. They may break even at $2000 a pup, but from my understanding bulldog litters are tiny and have some fairly serious medical issues that can come up. So my guess is they don't.
