need help re itchy dog

anneh Dec 30, 2006 11:37 AM

I adopted an 11mo dog a couple of months ago. He was biting his rear end/tail and licking inner groin so had vet check him for fleas/worms/scraped for mites. Assumed it was an allergy so switched to raw diet/salmon oil per another (holistic) vet that I see. He hasn't improved and started nibbling hind legs and licking feet but no problems on face/ears or missing hair other than where he has chewed. Have prevented sore spots by putting a neem mix on him. I noticed I have some itchy little spots on my chest and back and now concerned that perhaps he has mange. Please help me as I am so worried. I have made an appt with regular vet but they cannot see me until Tuesday because of holiday. Thanks for any help

Gee, I've never had a problem like this but it does sound like some kind of an allergy. Perhaps he hasn't been on the new food long enough to see any changes. Do you use any type of spray on him? How about his bed or other places he likes to sleep? You might want to spray those also. I hope your regular vet will have more suggestions for you. Please let us know what your regular vet has to say.

I agree with the other response, maybe he just needs a little more time on the new diet. Maybe you could even try an elimination diet and just give one food for a couple of weeks and then gradually introduce new foods. I hope he gets better soon, I have eczema and itchy skin is the worst!!
