Wondering ( Perspective Owner )

wolfsong442 Jan 03, 2007 10:46 AM

My name is Tiffany. I'm 20 years old and live in Indiana with my mother, currently. I'm unemployed and don't go to college but I expect that to change soon. I know I'm going to get dogs once I get a job and get enough money to move out on my own. I'll also be going to college and voulenteering at a zoo or at Wolf Park here in indiana. That's why I was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to get dogs...I've always said that I'd have enough time for them with everything that I'm doing, and it isn't an option not to get at least one dog...It's impossible for me to go without having one.

That's why I was thinking that getting more than one dog would be a good idea, sort of like a mini-pack so no one dog will be bored or upset that I'm not at home when I can't be there. As for breeds in this mini-pack, I was thinking a Siberian Husky, Doberman Pinscher and a White German Shepherd dog. That's why I'm posting on this board, to get information on the Husky breed and to see if they'd work well with the other two. I also plan on posting on the other two forums. I was thinking of getting all the dogs from online sites...

Any thoughts, ideas, opinions on this idea? It's been with me for a long time. I'm thinking of getting all the dogs under two years of age, under a year if possible, two years max, though, so that they can get used to the other dogs. Along the road I also want a cat, rats, a snake and ferrets, but I plan on keeping all the animals apart unless I know they can be together.

Having never owned a German Shepard or a Doberman I am unsure how they would react with a Husky. If you read down you will see that Huskies can be a little dangerous with cat's. Huskies enjoy playing and working to the extreme, more than most dogs. They play and can get rough with other animal's and not even know that they are hurting them. I couldn't imagine a Husky and a Ferrett, I can see my 4 month old being like "Hmm what is that, let me chase it" LOL.

Huskies are an interesting breed, although I have yet to see one grow to full size (had one till he was 9 mos, and now this one who is 4 mos) I am sure they are just as interesting as pups as they are adults.

If it where me, I wouldn't put those 3 breeds in the same house, just sounds like trouble, but that is just me.

Take care and good luck.

As far as a dobe and husky getting together it really depends more on the sex. I have a dobe and a husky and my husky tolerates my dobe but doens't really want to be around him. I think she sees him as a goofy teenager still. He plays a little ruff for her and even on walks seems to kind of irritate her-I've heard from more than one dobe peroson that a dobes best frined is another dobe

As far as getting a pack of dogs this is probally not a good idea for a lot of reasons.

*Have you had any dogs ever? what breeds?

*You need to be financially able to care for them all and while going to college and volunteering I don't see how you would ahve the money for it. One dog getting an obstruction or bloat could add up quick jsut with simple things like shots and food etc. If you don't hav ethe money then your mother has to be prepared to really take on the dogs should anything come up. I see it so many times when college students say I love the pup adn will apy for it and mom and dad get left with it and it eitheir gets taken to a shelter or sits in a cage all day.

*If your mom is ok with one dog then maybe go for it and when it feels right add more. You really should be enough pack for your dog and if you cna't be around that much or stimulate them enough then you don't really ahve time for one anyway.

Its better to wait till you are financially stable than to ever have to go through rehoming a dog.

*And why do you add you'd get them from online sites? Do you mean rescue sites?

*When I got my husky I got the real cat warning. the breeder had had them for years with her dogs and the day before I picked up my girl she said her male jsut reached down and grabbed its neck adn it was dead. My girl is allowed near my cats but my cats stay away so I don't worry to much. How I explain it to people is it can be a risk and you never know but if you would get rid of the dog for going after your cat when you know its a breed with a high prey drive then its better not to get it.

Siberian Husky, Doberman Pinscher and a White German Shepherd dog
- Huskies get along with most breeds, but I'm not so sure the GSD and Doberman would get along with them. Quite honestly, a trio of dogs is just a bad idea overall- especially to start out with. Two is a much better match up and two of opposite gender is ideal if you are trying to have a "friend' for the other dog while yo uare out. Still, individual personality makes some dogs better with other dogs than others. In my "pack" my female would love the world to only have her in it. My male is an extra that's she's learned to tolerate and actually enjoy his company, but if push came to shove, she'd prefer her humans and not share anything with our other dog.

a cat, rats, a snake and ferrets,
-As for getting along with the above animals- a husky is a tough choice with all of them. Their predatory instincts are huge and anything that moves fast is a target. THe other breeds you mentioned are better in this catergory.
