yelping

blufalcon Jan 09, 2007 02:00 AM

I am a new sib owner. She is just 4 months old. She just started yelping at strangers. As far as I have seen they are not doing anything to her. It has happened only twice. Once at the vet's office with the assistant and again at the pet store with the owner of the store. The yelping sounds as if someone it hurting her. I am not sure if this is typical behavior or something I should be worried about.

I wouldn't be too worried about it, but I'd not respond to it either. Huskies can be quite vocal when they want to manipulate a situation to get their way.

I completely agree. Huskies are well known for being vocal. Mine will "whine" just to get attention. They could just be laying on the bed and want some attention if I'm in the other room!!

I just dont understand what it is she could be trying to say when she is yelping at people when they are reaching to pet her. She has continued to do this with more people. Some she knows and some she does not know. I am confused?!?

She's just trying to manipulate the situation. Noise creates a reaction and so she's being reinforced for the behavior. It won't go away, and may get worse if it continues to be reinforced. There have to be signals this noise is about to start, stop whatever is going to happen BEFORE the noise happens. Once she's making the noise, learning won't happen and you are basically in "damage control" mode.

i was going to say maybe she is doing it like the infamous husky woo or yodel... but then again she may be doing it for attention.
if she knows you will pay attention to her when she does it, then STOP!
if you ignore her when she does it she may learn not to do it at all.
i have a male in training that constantly barks.. (yes BARKS LOL, but its very high pitched) and when i started ignoring him when he did it he eventually found out hes not getting any attention if he does that.
seemed to work with my Ranger.
i hope this will work for your gal
good luck!
Happy Trails!
