how much for 9 month old pups?

julierose Jan 15, 2007 07:56 PM

Hi,

I posted about the Vitamin C. Now I'm wondering if my pups are getting enough food. My two mixed breed pups are 9 1/2 months...Grace-female, 48 lbs; Nathan, male, 75 lbs. We started them on BARF 2 Saturdays ago. Every other day, I give Grace 1 lb and Nate 1 1/2 lbs of chicken backs over 2 meals which they finish quickly. Alternate days I mix veggie mash with an equal portion of protein. Grace gets 2 cups and Nate gets about 3, also over 2 meals. The veggie mash is made in my juicer (I save the pulp and mix it back with the juice). It is mainly dark greens, carrots, assorted veggies, some garlic. So far, for mix-ins I have used chopped beef, eggs and oatmeal, mackeral, cottage cheese and sweet potatoes, usually topped with some olive oil, a squirt each of cod liver oil and flax seed oil and sprinkled with brewer's yeast and a kelp capsule shared between the two. This morning I gave them each 1/2 lb of chopped chicken hearts mixed in, and sardines and eggs this evening. They finish and lick their bowls right clean every meal. I have purchased beef kidney and chicken liver for more offal meals, also ground turkey, pork bones, and will be keeping an eye open for more goodies.

So here's the question.... Is it enough? Should I be increasing the amount of food? They seem to me to be fine, not starving, but I do not know if they are getting sufficient amounts for their young bodies. Their activity level has not changed. They still wrassle and do all the regular puppy things.

Thanks for your answer(s), in advance

I really don't have the answer to your question. Have you posted on the vet board, they might be able to help you.
