Eskimo Potty Training

b_k_eskie Jan 18, 2007 10:44 PM

I am Karen and I new to the forum world and hope to learn new things about my new Eskimo puppy. I have two children who love the new puppy and he is so sweet and gentle with my kids.
Does any one have any potty training tips for my Eskimo puppy he is 12 weeks old. I have tried crate and that didn't make him very happy. I have tried taking him out once an hour but he still is going in the house. Is there something special with Eskimos training that I am missing. - Karen Proud new Eskimo dog owner

Hi Karen, and Welcome to the Forum! I have an 8 month old American Eskimo/Shiba Inu puppy. Murphy was almost 5 months when we got him, and it was summer so he had the advantage of an open doggie door, most of the time. He had a bit of trouble figuring out what to do if his door wasn't open for awhile, but now he rarely has an accident. I would think you just need to use a lot of patience, taking him out when he wakes up, after meals, etc., as you would any puppy. I hope you will get some other suggestions.

Eskies are fairly clean pups. You should be able to houe train relatively fast.

The crate is by far the easiest method to use, but confining to a small area in the house with baby gates when you can't supervise may help and/or leashing a puppy to you to supervise so you can observe when she has to go out would help. Know that when a puppy wakes from a nap they have to go out. About 30 minutes after eating they have to go out and if they've had some vigorous play session, I'd let them out as well.

Hi Karen and welcome to the Eskie board. I have Shibas myself so we are kind of related. I think Eskies are beautiful dogs. Like my breed or any spitz type breed, they can be a little headstrong and independent. Patience and being consistant with training can be a big help. If your pup has access to the backyard from the kitchen let's say, you can do some training from there. You could lay papers next to the backdoor and make the transition from there. At 12 weeks your pup still has a very tiny bladder and will need to go out more than you might think is necessary, maybe every 2 hours. When he does go outside to do his business he should be praised. He'll soon get the idea and as he grows he will be able to hold it for longer periods of time. What is your boys name? It would be great if you could post a picture or two, I would love to see that white ball of fluff!
