frequent urination in foster dog

carmeny Jan 19, 2007 01:42 PM

When Mojo goes out to pee, she pees about 3 times and they are good long pees (she is not just marking with a dot here and there). When she is in the house she wears a doggie diaper with a pad. I let them out every hour to 1.5 hours and when i remove the diaper the pad is soaked. she then goes outside and pees more - her pad is rarely dry when i remove the diaper. she does not strain to pee and she is not drinking an excessive amount. she has also developed a slight cough in the last couple of weeks - not all the time but when she starts she coughs for about a minute. could she have a bladder infection or urinary tract infection? what could cause a slight cough. she has been vaccinated for parvo and distemper if that information is of any use. she came from the spca but I have had her for just over a month. the peeing seems to have gotten worse the last couple of weeks. thank you in advance!

You didn't mention Mojo's age, but the most likely causes are a bladder infection, kidney failure, or urinary incontinence due to lack of estrogen. The first two can be determined through a blood test and urine analysis, so start there. If the first two likelihoods are eliminated, the cause is probably the third. This is not all-inclusive, as diabetes, mellitus or insipidus, Cushing's disease, or steroid use could also be the cause, but it is the best place to start.

sorry she is about 4-5 years old. so in your opinion i should take her to the vet for a urinalysis to rule out the first two. if it turns out to be a bladder infection, what could i give her instead of medicine?

If it turns out to be a bladder infection, caused by E.coli, you can treat it with d-mannose.
