There are books on how to build your own agility equipment. For very casual training, I've used cinder blocks and broom sticks for jumps. PVC is used to make much of the equipment overall.
I personally believe that classes in agility are a good idea even for the most casual of students. It's easy to over do it when you don't know the basics and even easier to get into some very bad habits that may make your job harder later if you ever want to get more serious about the sport. Also, classes give you focus and direction on what to train. It's a bit more complex than it actually looks.
