Basset Hound on snow?

slo007 Feb 03, 2007 02:59 PM

Hi!

I have a 2-year old Basset Hound and am wondering if I should take her with us on a trip to the mountains (lots of snow). How will she do in such a cold environment? (I live in San Diego)

I suspect a coat is a good idea. Should I worry about her paws as well?

Any advice would be great. We are taking our German Sheppard with us, and I know the basset will be histerical if we leave her behind with a neighbor.

Hello!

When I first got hooked on basset hounds, we were living in one of the ski resorts in Colorado. Our basset did fine there. The thing you have to watch is that the snow is not too deep. Stomp it down with your feet if necessary. Also, remember that bassets are single coated dogs and not equipped to be outside in cold weather for extended periods of time. Limit the time outdoors.

So take your babies with you and have fun!

Thanks for replying! We decided to take Sophie with us. It's going to be her first big trip! We took our Dachshund everywhere when he was with us, from San Francisco to Salt Lake City to Santa Fe. He even went to Brazil (by plane) once.

My Basset Hound Dutchie was 1 of those dogs that wouldn't go out to take care of business when it snowed unless I was out there but because they kids missed school on a snow day & they went out to play she would be out there too I even have photos of her out in the snow with the kids on a CD since I keep all of my photos on CDS but I am real careful not to leave her out to long in the snow. I just let her stay out there with the kids since they only stay out there for 5 or 10 minutes the most as soon as they come back in she comes back in with them.
