Walking my BC

crystal2007 Feb 03, 2007 05:41 PM

We recently bought a six week old Border Collie. I've been with her for one see now. She is walking outside but she is scared to walk in new areas she hasn't been to yet. She will only walk down one street and back to her home. Is she too young or does she have a fear? Do a pull her forward until she gives up and starts walking? I tried pulling her but I don't want her to be afraid of me and not sure if this is the way. She is scared to walk any further. I even called her to get a treat but she will not walk any further in a new part of her new neighbourhood. Any ideas?

Never force exercise on a puppy. It will harm her body and her mind. She is too young to even leave her mother and littermates, and too young to be out in public. She's is at very high risk of catching a contagious dog disease and dying of it. You can find leash-training information at the link below my signature--it's all free. For the information on when and where you can safely take the dog out, talk with your veterinarian.

Thanks a lot. I think I was jumping the gun. I am going to have to slow down a bit. I was too anxious and worried and was expecting too much too soon. I never had a puppy before and this dog is so smart already so I thought I could bring him out and about.

Yes... depending on what your vet says, a puppy shouldn't be outside until 12-14 weeks old and properly vaccinated. This also helps the immune system to develop to ward off any possible sickness.
