Periodontal Disease Vaccine

BMD Feb 22, 2007 06:54 PM

What is your opinion of the new vaccine to prevent periodontal disease (porphyromonas denticanis gulae salivosa)? It's made by Pfizer. My vet suggested it for my 14 year old Norfolk Terrier. But he already has advanced dental disease. I'd have his teeth cleaned/extracted but he has an enlarged heart and couldn't survive the surgery. I really don't think a vaccine would be good for him at this stage either, right? I have him on various supplements (CoQ10, Hawthorne, Taurine, Carnitine etc.) and he does take some Lasix. He is fed a raw diet and is doing well considering his heart failure and having a bit of a collapsed trachea. Is there anything else I can be doing to help him with his teeth?

I'm not a fan of this vaccine. It was tested on only 600 animals, and bacterial vaccines, or bacterins, do not by their nature produce lasting immunity - unlike a viral vaccine, which you can give only once and expect to get lifetime immunity, bacterial vaccines usually need to be repeated twice a year to keep the immunity constant.

I don't feel that the benefit is likely to outweigh the risks.

Can you brush your dog's teeth?
