Wanting a Boston Terrier for my son

quincy Feb 23, 2007 06:57 PM

Hi all..My son is in love with a boston terrier on his brothers paperroute and really wants one.He loves all dogs and is always talking about them.I am seriously thinking about getting him one this next birthday as he will be six.I know what your thinking but I realize he is young and it will be my responsibility to take care of the pup.I currently have a chihuahua that is mine and a Italian greyhound which is my 13yo sons dog.
My questions is are they hard to potty train.I cant imagine they would be any more difficult then a Chi or IG though.I will only have small dogs.My son is very good with animals and is very sensitive to thier needs, he is not really a rough and tumble type kid, but I want something he can play with and throw a ball for and just buddy up with. What do you think?
BTW we are home all the time as I homeschool so there is plenty of time for potty training etc..Personally Ive always liked Boston terriers as my neighbor had one that was just a doll many years ago..

Read the AKC link http://www.akc.org/breeds/boston_terrier/index.cfm about temperament of a Boston. I never had one, but they do seem like nice dogs. I have a Border Terrier they are great with kids and not as hyper as some terrier breeds.

If you are considering getting a pup. Check with local vet and dog clubs in your area to find out all the information and they can answer all your questions.

House breaking. I don't think they are anymore difficult than most breeds.

Might even want to consider getting you son in dog obedience, confirmation or other dog sports. This can be a great training tool for your son.

Be sure to post again and let us know what you decide.

Since you already know that the ultimate responsiblilty for raising the pup will fall on you, there shouldn't be a problem. It's a plus that you are always home so you can monitor your son and the pup. A good friend of mine has 3 Boston's and they are really quite hardy dogs.
