I was wondering if there was an optimal age for a malamute to be neutered? The vet wants to do it a little earlier than I think appropriate.

This may not apply to all breeds and a good source of information would be your breeder and your veterinarian but the usual optimum age to neuter is 6 months. However many vets now agree that spaying and neutering at an earlier age is acceptable.

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.
I have heard that four months is what most vets recommend.
We have a puppy that is 4 months old now and talking with our vet, he would do the procedure now if we wanted, but he recommends that we wait till at least 6 months of age. His reasoning for that is by the time he is 6 months he will be fully matured in the developent of the eurethra (think I spelled it right) and that if you neuter earlier before it has matured you could be seeing issues down the road later in life with urinary track issues. He also told me the jury is still out on doing early neutering. There has not been enough data to show the upside or downside of doing it at that age.

Before six months of age. Before they reach puberty.
