infected anal glands?

reba Feb 28, 2007 08:25 AM

Hi, I have a greyhound mix who has been licking his rear for a while. Finally today I thought I'd try to express his anal glands to see if that was the issue. (I used to work as a grooming assistant and there was a non-invasive technique I was taught to relieve the anal sacs.) When I did this to my dog this morning, instead of the usual brown liquid that comes out, a yellow puss oozed out. I feel so bad for him. Is there anything I can do, or is this the kind of thing that requires antibiotics? He eats a chicken and rice kibble... would a raw diet help him at all?
Thanks so much for any advice.

You might try homeopathic Hepar sulphuris 30c twice a day orally for a week. If you can get a blunt cannula (small tube on the end of a syringe) into the opening, you can flush it daily with diluted calendula tincture. If not possible, try antibiotics.

Hi Reba,

You mentioned a "non-invasive" method to express the anal glands that you learned while you were a grooming assistant. Since this is a task I hate to attempt, I could use any "non invasive" tips. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
