I have a two week old orphaned puppy who I have been hand raising who *i believe* is having trouble with bowel movements.
Just to give a brief background...He was brought to me at 2 days old (on Feb 19). His mother was in labor for 3 days (and to ill to have a c-section). 7 pups were stillborn, I recieved 3, and two died within the first three days (which was caused by pnemonia from the looks of their lungs upon necropsy). None of the pups were able to recieve any colostrum because she was septic and had no milk.
When I got him he had diarrhea. I fed him esbilac and after 3 days he became constipated. I tried diluting the formula, and after that didn't work I tried giving him a drop of Karo syrup. I was weary to try anything else because of his already compromised immune system. I took him to the vet and he was put on Clavamox to prevent any infection he may have gotten from his mother. He continued to be constipated, but still having small hard bowel movements, until this Sat when I found one of my dogs in the nest box with him nursing him. She has never had puppies and is full of milk and has taken the position of full time mom! Amazing what animals can do...
We went to the vet yesterday and he didn't have much to say about the constipation issue. He said that my dog has plenty of milk and to let her do her job...and he said he didn't know what to do. I am now not able to tell if he is having any bowel movements because Reesee, his new mom, has been stimulating him. I have checked numerous (let me emphasize numerous) times to see if he is having bowel movements and have seen nothing, no shred of evidence in the nest box. When I stimulate him myself I get nothing, and I only see her licking up his urine. His tummy is always full...but it doesn't necessary look bloated, he is sleeping MUCH more then when I was hand feeding him, and I only hear him crying occasionally (but more than when he was alone). He will be two weeks old tomorrow.
I know I am dragging on...but I would like to save him. He will be a beautiful dog if he makes it and has a wonderful home waiting for him. I am sure I am worrying too much, but I would like anyone else's input...or any suggestions of remedies I should try. Thanks for reading my novel
