Sick after being spayed

carmeny Feb 28, 2007 10:30 PM

My newly adopted female was spayed on Monday. the surgery went well according to the vet. she was given a pain medication and another shot of something to help her immune system because she is malnourished. I just adopted her last week from the humane society and she is very skinny. She is eating very well and appears to be drinking okay (not alot of drinking) but she is throwing up (about 2 times a day) and has not had a bowel movement at all. I am wondering if this is normal after having her surgery. I have two other females that were spayed a few years ago and her adopted sister was spayed on monday as well and they had no problems. Her incision appears normal but she does appear to be a little sore (careful when she is walking). I think I will phone the vet in the morning just to make sure everything is okay but has anyone had any experiences with this after a spaying procedure?

Yes, nausea and vomiting in some dogs does occur after surgery. It usually only persists for a few days and stops after the anesthetic has left the system. No bowel movement could be due to the fact that she is vomiting up everything she eats. I would try limiting her food intake until she is feeling better, and limit her exercise (just to a leash outside) until next week. If she becomes dehydrated (the skin you her neck stays put when you pinch it) you can mix a small amount of unflavored pedalyte with her water. If she continues vomiting there could be a complication with the surgery and I would contact your vet (which you said you are going to do anyway ) Just make sure her incision stays clean (no pus, swelling, or redness) so that she does not contract a general infection. Good luck and let us know how she is!
