You can't go wrong with a well bred standard poodle. Just make sure you find a good breeder that deals with the hips and genetic issues.
Recently we had to put my 10 year old down. He had cancer, arthritis, and his pain medication was not working anymore. Our 13 year old son cried almost all day, I cried half the day, it was about the worst day I can remember. But. The dog was flat out the best dog I have ever seen his whole life. Getting him all those years ago was the smartest thing I have ever done.
If you are prepared for the grooming and exercise, you will never be sorry.
My big boy was never a couch potato; not hyper at all, but he enjoyed life and physical activity of all kinds; walking, swimming, etc. His personality was very mellow, gentle and laid back - had an interest and curiosity in everything, but was very "live and let live" in attitude. He and I visited at the nursing home, hospital, daycare centers and schools, and he never put a foot wrong.
Get a good standard socialize him and train him well, and you'll cherish every day with him.
