About 3 weeks ago, we bathed our toy poodle, gave him a hair cut and then applied K9 Advantix to him. It was our first (and last) time to use this stuff. We were using frontline plus and although he didn't show signs of fleas, he does (what we think) have allergies becuase he's always scratching at his neck around where his collar is.
We didn't know if it was fleas or dry skin or what so we decided to just try a different type flea medication.
About an hour after we applied the advantix, it was still wet so we checked back and the next day it was still wet but turning into almost a gel. We assumed it was normal and Jack was acting normal so we didn't think anything of it.
A few days later, I noticed that the area we applied the advantix to was sort of crusty and jack would cry and squirm when we touched it. I had my wife hold him down while I pulled the hair back to see what the deal was and we were shocked to see that it hadn't been absorbed into the skin at all. It had formed this waxy crust and had blistered his skin very badly and actually cracked the skin open. It looked like a big scab on his skin.
It's not bleeding but one can clearly see where the skin is broken and red.
From what I've read, flea medications can be a crap shoot depending on the individual dog and apparently advantix didn't work for our poodle.
Fosters and Smith are sending a replacement order of frontline plus (since I know it works) but for the time being, is there any reccomendation on how to get rid of this large wax-like crust? It's water repellant. We tried scrubbing giving him a bath to try and wash it off but that didnt' work. Should we shave all the hair off that spot? Would rubbing alcohol dissolve this stuff? It's been there a couple of weeks and hasn't shown any signs of going away.
Like I said though, he's not in any type of pain unless we actually scratch the area or mess with it. I would like to get rid of it as quickly as possible so his skin can heal back.
