Six years ago, we had a Black Lab who was diagnosed with epilepsy. The vet told us we could get some testing done, but that it would be very expensive, and probably wouldn't show anything anyway. His seizures weren't that bad, he came out of them well, and things seemed ok. Then one night he went into something called Seizure Elipticus, and suffered brain damage. We had to get him put down the very next day (our vet at the time didn't have any weekend or evening services). Now fast forward to today. I have a little dog called Spike whose mother was 1/2 Chihuahua and half terrier. Spike's father was just a run-of-the-mill dog. Last week he peed on dad's bed (no one saw this), and we were all rather surprised because that didn't seem like him. He's less than a year and a half. Last night, I awoke to him trembling. I think he tried to get up, but I can't be sure. At first I thought he was dreaming (twitching, making noises, etc), until I realized his eyes were open. He had complete loss of bladder. I'm not sure how long it lasted, but he seemed to come out quickly. When he came out of it, he didn't want me to touch him in any way, and moved to the foot of the bed to sleep. I know I have to take him to the vet as soon as I can, but right now I need some advice. Is it possible a dog can sleep with his eyes open and pee himself? Unlike our black lab, Spike's body wasn't rigid and stiff, but very limp, as if he were asleep. I don't think I can go through this with another dog.
