egg resorbtion

shelley7950 Oct 10, 2003 07:30 AM

Has anyone here had experience with iguana's resorbing their eggs? My female laid 17 eggs last January (on her basking shelf, totally ignoring my carefully made covered litter pan nest box) and this year she came into breeding season (early) again. She turned orange, got super restless and affectionate, stopped eating and plumped out in the tummy...A few days ago she suddenly didn't leave her basking shelf, lost most of her orange color and returned to her usual crabby self...She also asked for and ate some collard greens and some dandelions...Not a lot, but she hadn't eaten at all for two weeks before this..Anyway, she seems uncomfortable, but not sick or lethargic..Is this normal behavior or should I schedule a vet visit?

Thanks for any help or information you can give me...

If she was gravid, she may have resorbed her eggs. The only way to know is to get an x-ray. If she has retained eggs she's in trouble. Normally, captive igs' gravidity progress is tracked by a vet.

Our Iggi has never laid eggs. She has resorbed them once in February 2001, and again in April 2002. The last time, she stopped eating. Ig_mommy would have none of that, and had her to our reptile vet. Ig_mommy believes that all babies should eat and poop at least daily. Iggi does, except when she was gravid. The vet took X-rays, and we saw the eggs. Anyway, we too had a nesting box fixed up, but she would have nothing to do with it. After her appetite returned, we took her back to the vet to get follow up Xrays, just in case there was a problem.
I recommend a vet visit to Xray your ig while gravid, and then after, to make sure everything is alright.

Thanks for your help guys...Over the weekend she has definitely finished resorbing her eggs, has thinned down and is eating like a pig...Seems perfectly comfortable now..I guess I just thought resorbtion would be a slow gradual process, but in fact it happened very suddenly...I will take her to a vet for an x-ray just to make sure nothing's left...Thanks again for the info...
