Upset Tummy in Chihuahua

abukuchick Mar 28, 2007 08:57 AM

One of my two 9 month old chihuahuas has had an upset tummy for three days now. He's had lots of diarreha but otherwise is acting normal.

The first day I only let him have his normal dog food, no treats, to see if it resolved; it did not. He actually had an accident in his crate which he's NEVER done (he managed to use a blanket to poop in, then ball it up and shove it to the back of his crate).

So yesterday I fasted him for about 18 hours and then fed him only boiled chicken and rice (at a rate of 1 part chicken to 2 parts rice). He didn't have any accidents, but had me up every hour to go poop! It's not watery, but very soft and somewhat mucousy.

What else can I do? He's not eating anything until I get home from work around 3 so that I can be here when he's ready to go, I think he got all of yesterday's food out between midnight and 5 am (sigh).

I feel so bad for him, but I'm at a loss for what could be wrong! It's our first episode of diarreha that has lasted more than 2-3 bowel movements, but at least there's no vomiting!

I'm sorry to hear about your little one. I think it might be time for a visit to the vet if he hasn't improved by now. With the smaller dogs and especially a pup you have to be very careful. Please come back and let us know how he's doing.

I talked to the vet's office and took in stool samples on both boys just incase. Both came back negative, but we still gave Andre a dose of dewormer. Now I have to mix a bacterial supplement into his food for a week which will hopefully help. They're still on the boiled chicken and rice and hopefully my little man will be on the mend. This is one of the first times I'm SUPER glad that he doubled his projected weight of 4-5lbs (they're both around 10)!
