Kidney Failure

WayneW Mar 31, 2007 04:10 PM

Hello,

I have a 9 year old female pit bull with mid-range kidney failure. She vomits, is not eating well and has low red cell count. I am giving her Procrit and sub-cue saline daily. She will not gain weight and I would like to lower her phosphorus too. This weekend the vet will IV her with fluids and give pepsid for her stomach. Her HCT was 17 and I got it up to 28 on her test yesterday. Is there any way to prolong her life as she is my family? I have her complete tests if those would help.

Thanks, Wayne

One thing that should help is to feed her raw beef kidneys, preferably as a puree. This supplies many of the nutrients kidneys need, as well as the erythropoietin which stimulates red cell production, in place of Procrit. If she needs fluid, she should get it every day or two. Ask your vet to show you how to give it under the skin and to set you up with the fluids and the administration set to enable you to do it at home.
