help with training!

stevenf Apr 01, 2007 02:29 PM

I have a 7 week old lab mix that I am trying to train the basics of obedience to. He will be an outside but sometimes inside and car travel dog so I want it to do its business in the grass. How do you train an outside dog to mess only outside?

also, Pretty much the only things I really need is to do his business outside, sit, stay, and heel.
I have been trying the sit technique with treats and he does it but when I dont have a treat, he acts like he doesnt know whats going on. If he walks away, you have to go get him, it doesnt matter how long you call his name or snap your fingers. When does this destraction go away? how Do I teach him to heel and to do his business outside?

He's 7 weeks old. He's an infant basically. What you are asking is the equivalent of trying to teach a 1 year old to recite the ABCs. The behaiors you are asking for take time to teach and proof. Each dog is different in how fast it picks up a new behavior and how quickly it generalizes that behavior. Practice is important, but age appropriate practice and training is necessary.

Your dog at 7 weeks old absolutely does not have the bladder function to be completely potty trained much less trained not to go indoors. Also, a dog that is used to going in a small kennel area will be much more difficult to train to not go inside. It's not impossible, but it's more difficult.

Hi All

I agree with Chelle that 7 weeks is a little young to expect results to any training. Maybe a little soft training to get your pup used to you and what you expect....lots of praise and attention when you get the desired outcome....but don't get excited when accidents happen...they do not have the control of their bodily functions yet and you could cause them to dislike you and not trust you if you started with the heavy training at this age.

Enjoy your pup at this age they are lots of fun...just remember accidents happen at this age when they are kids just ask your mom
