Nursing mother dog won't eat. Help!

mistydawn Apr 02, 2007 01:17 AM

Hi. My dog who is nursing a litter will not eat. I am at my wits end. I have tried everything. I did take her to the vet. She is fine. Those puppies need her to make good milk. What can I do to get her to eat? Thanks.

The vet didn't give you any advice regarding this problem? I find that odd.

I guess if it were me, I'd make some boiled chicken and rice and put some vitamins in it and see if the dog ate that. If she did, yeah, let her eat it for a day or so and then slowly add her normal food into the mixture of chicken and rice. If she didn't eat it, I'd go back to the vet and demand more tests.

Also, you may want to start supplimenting the puppies as well so they get food. It's not ideal and the mom may just let you keep feeding her pups, but it's what I woudld do in that situation.

Thanks for the advice. The vet was little if no help dealing with the not eating issue. However, later after I wrote this message, I tried puppy formula mixed with eukanuba puppy ground up dog food. I ground up the dry dog food in the blender. She ate it! Then I gave it to her again this morning. She ate it! I feel so much better.

Good! Glad you got her to eat! Hope she's doing better today and the pups can get some food.
