The answer to this question is long and varied.

For me, UKC registration for this breed would be a must because I believe that not being registered with UKC suggests a lack of attention to the important aspects of a solid breeding program and failure to attempt to meet a breed standard. I'll admit though that I'm not sure if there's a better registry for American Bulldogs than UKC like there is for Boarder COllies.

I'd look for a breeder that is actively showing their dogs in their registry. If a breeder is not showing their dogs and breeding to a specific standard, they might as well be breeding mutts. I realize that showing again doesn't necessarily equate quality nor defects, but not showing is a sign of lack of attention to detail and getting an outside opinion on one's breeding program is important.

I'd look for a breeder that is trying to better the breed. Not just saying they are, but actually doing it. A breeder that can tell you the good points and bad points of a dog and why they made the match up of dogs that they chose to compliment each other. Breeding the dog they have to another dog they have just to fill an order for puppies is NOT a sign of a great breeder.

A great breeder interviews you and takes great care to place the correct temperament of dog with you- sometimes offending you in the process by not letting you have a puppy from the next litter because it wasn't a good match for your lifestyle.

A great breeder does health check on all dogs and has the records for you to see at any point in time. They screen for genetic defects known to the breed and report the findings to the OFA (good and bad). A great breeder has nothing to hide.

These are just a few things I look for in a great breeder. There ar emore, but this will get you started.

ABA is a little stricter than UKC. ABA requires a photo and proof of pure breed by registration. UKC will register a dog with just a vets letter, thats it. UKC also allows people to become "experts" and register ABs that have no papers. It is sad because alls that takes is a letter as well.
I preffer ABA.
