German Shepherd/ Whippet???

bakersdaughter Apr 12, 2007 10:06 AM

We just adopted Shannon from a shelter, where they identified her as a 4 month old German Shepherd. Our vet said she is really more like 6 months, since all her teeth are in, and will not get much bigger than she is now (25 pounds, about 20 inches tall).

Her markings, as you can see, are classic GSD, but what else is there? My best guess is whippet--
1. She's fast and likes to run
2. She seems to be a sighthound--she chases blowing leaves and thrown rope toys, but not balls
3. Her ears flatten back when she trots or runs
4. She has a very lean, long-legged body
5. She has a really long muzzle

We love her, despite wanting a big dog. She is very smart, trains easily and has a great disposition, especially with our 7 year old lazy Rottweiler.

Here are pics. What do you think?

I'm terrible with the "guess the mix game" but I agree she's got something mixed in her. I'm not seeing whippet in the pics, but that doesn't mean it's not there. I'm not great with this after all.

She's very cute and I actually think she'll fill out a bit- be aroung 40 to 45 lbs as an adult. She may get a tiny bit taller as well. Larger dogs grow a bit slower than smaller dogs.

I would say Shannon is part Shepard for sure and maybe some Lab? Thing is I can see what you are saying about a possible sighthound mixed in. She is a great looking dog!

If you were going along those lines I would probably say greyhound rather than whippet. While it is possible for a gsd to get a whippet pregnant and for her to deliver naturally it doesnt seem likely. There is a considerable size difference and if the gsd was the male the pups would have been very large for a whippet to deliver. I dont see someone paying for a caesarian then dumping the pups.

The fact that she chases leaves and things you throw just tells me that she is a puppy. There is definately gsd in there and they will naturally chase things that move... most dogs will at that age.

Either way you have a gorgeous pup and you should have plenty of fun ahead of you

greyhounds are huge. If that dog had greyhound in it, it would have exceeded their size expectations, not fallen short of it.

Also, a whippet could get a gsd pregnant, it doesn't necessarily have to be the gsd getting the whippet pregnant... although I don't think there is whippet in that dog.

She looks like a mix of mixes, not just two purebreds mixed together. I would say she has some shepherd in her, but I don't think either of her parents were pure shepherd.
I think her bloodline is probably too diluted to be able to pick out more than that.

HI
We are new here and wanted to take a stab at it. I have a dog that is mostly whippet, but with a touch of lab. I dont personally think your dog has much if any whippet in her, just do her structure, and that we own one. She is really cute, and best of luck to you! check out my link for a few photos of her.
