my basenji's is becoming more destructiv

irimi1 Apr 12, 2007 09:49 PM

We've noticed a recent change in behavior in our 2 y/o basenj. He's chewing up fabric MORE THAN USUAL. After 4 months of having him we adopted a 2 y/o male Ibizan (both are fixed). They're getting along very well, play fighting, etc.

After 1 1/2 months of sharing the attention, he's now dragging the blankets out of the crates and chewing on them, he destroyed a padded folded chair (which he had never even licked in the 4 months he was solo), and he bit through his leash. Both dogs are crated during the day (8 hrs) and taking on walks and the dog park 2-3 days a week.

Does he need more exercise? Is he jealous? (he doesnt get to sleep with us as much as he used to since the Ibizan moved in). HELP!

Some dogs get very "oral" when they are bored or nervous. Some dogs even when not bored or nervous just like to chew and find odd things to take out that behavior on.

I wasn't 100% sure from your post if this basenji was an adult when you brought him home, but it sounds like that's the case.

My younger dog whom I also brough in at about teh same age overall loves to chew. It's no tsomething I noticed right away, but it became more evident as time went on. I joke to people and say "he'd be a nail biter if her were human." So I just make sure I give him appropriate things to chew on like bully sticks and Boodah Velvet bones and as long as I keep up on that, he leaves inappropriate things alone.
