Breeder reference?

spunsilver Apr 19, 2007 05:11 PM

Hello, I'm new posting here. Does anyone happen to have any good (or bad) experience with Sylons Poodles in Troy, Ohio? I may be purchasing a toy poodle pup from them. The breeder, Ms. Steinbrugge, sounds very pleasant and her dogs are lovely but this is a long-distance purchase and so any hands-on info would be greatly appreciated!

I've dealt with many breeders long distance, but when it came right down to getting ap uppy that way, I couldn't do it. I still traveled a fair distance to get my dog, but I drove there to see the dogs and home they were in.

My recommendation to you if you have your heart set on this particular breeder is to ask this breeder if she's placed any of her puppies in your area before or if she knows and poodle breeders in your area that have similar lines to her dogs. A great breeder knows the breeding community very well and knows what's out there. You could then chat with at least one other breeder who knows her (two would be better) and meet the dogs.

Thank you very much for this advice. I should have asked sooner - I think this would have been the best way to go... but I couldn't wait so now I will just have to hope for the best. My pup is coming next week.

The other thing is that these pups go fast! I talked to the breeder for the first time on Wednesday evening when there were 3 pups available. By Friday morning they were all gone! It doesn't leave much time for reference checks (or incentive on the breeder's part). From the research I've done, it is often like this unless you are prepared to pick your breeder before there are pups and then wait for months till the pups are born and ready.

Fortunately, after I made the decision, my boyfriend found that a colleague of his from Ohio knows this breeder and says she is very good. So I lucked out!
