forever licking front legs

TammiT Apr 24, 2007 09:02 PM

Hello. I am the mother of a beautiful girl named Sadie. She is by far the best dog I have ever had. I was very lucky to have her come into my life. She is now almost 13 years old and she has never had any behavioral problems besides the typical puppy things. My question to fellow Ridgeback owners is this, my girl is obsessed with keeping her front legs clean. She is forever licking them and always makes sure they are perfectly clean. Is this a common trait in these dogs? I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanx!

Sounds more like allergies than a need to stay clean. Might want to bring her into the vet and have it checked out. I know my older dog does this seasonally as well as a response to a food allergy.

Thank you so much for the feedback. Sounds like a good option to have the vet check it out. I just assumed it was a strange habit she had but the more I think about it the allergies makes perfect sense. Thanks again from me and my girl.

I had two Ridges, now just one. She is getting older also. Allergies are certainly a problem to get checked. I think in my case the older dog gets joint discomfort and licks to warm and massage the joints. Not a vet. Just my opinion.

I appreciate the feedback. She tends to lick them alot after being in the water or if they get dirty. Also after she eats or if I touch them. I have gotten into the habit of massaging them for her and she gives me lots of appreciative smooches when I'm done. Your opinion makes a lot of sense knowing how much she likes the massages. Thanx again for your input!
