New to Raw )

Kaseys412 Apr 25, 2007 12:44 PM

I just switched my 8 month old gsd to a raw diet, today as a matter of fact. I offered her a whole Tilapia but she showed no interest whatsoever, so I tossed the fish out back for the wild kitties and gave her a big chicken leg and thigh, which she happily ate. If she doesn't develop a taste for fish is there something I should add so she gets her omega fatty acids? I will try some salmon or mackeral in the future after she is a little more used to the whole raw thing. Anything else I should be adding for extra health benefits? I'm not adding veggies to her meals because most of what I have read says they aren't necessary, but she does love an occasional apple to snack on. Any known sites or tips would be appreciated!! Thanks

Hi, welcome to raw feeding.

I think that whole fish can be a rocky transition for some dogs. My GSD used to drop whole fish on the ground and stomp on it for a while before he would eat it. He did like canned fish, and raw fish filets.

I am currently raw feeding my APBT puppy. I mostly feed her the raw food from Slanker's grassfed beef. She also likes chicken, but seemingly turkey isn't her thing.

I give dogs omega 3 supplements and vitamin e.

Do you mind telling me where you live ? The reason I'm asking is...I live about 35 miles from Slanker's grass fed beef (the one in Paris,TX). Do they have different locations ?

Was the fish thawed when you gave it to your dog? The reason I ask is that mine won't eat fish that is thawed because of the texture, it's slimely and he really doesn't care for that. So when I give him fish now I just give it to him right from the freezer then he just digs right in!

If you can get your hands on some organs later down the road(you might now what to try organs for a little while yet because they can sometimes make new raw fed dogs a little scooty) that would be good, beef liver is especially good. Ask around, if you have people in your area that get beef butchered for them they might not want the liver. Or maybe their are people in your area that grow beef and you can get 1/2 an animal through them just let them know that you are interested in getting the odds and ends for your dog as well. We have always had our own beef so I take some things for grated sometimes..like all the liver (most of the people that buy beef from us don't want the liver!) heart, tongue etc.
