Lupus, etc.

I have a golden retriever/(?) mix that I acquired from an animal shelter two weeks ago. She is between 4 to 5 yrs old and weighs 43#. About a week ago she started "dragging her butt" and, her nose was warm. I took her to the vet yesterday and he diagnosed an infected right anal sac and drained/cleaned it. He also said she had "Discoid Lupus" on the top of her nose and recommended applying sunscreen to her nose.

He prescribed Prednisone 20mg 1Xdaily for 3 days then 1/2 once daily for 3 days then 1/2 every other day. He also prescribed Cephalexin, 500mg 1X day for 28 days.

I've read some articles on the adverse effects of using commercial sunscreen and, as dogs have a habit of "licking their nose" I'm reluctant to use commercial sunscreen repeatedly on her nose. In your professional opinion, Is the commercial sunscreen OK to use on her nose or not?
And, Do you have or know of a natural sunscreen recipe that I could make to use on her nose?

TX!

There are a number of options you have, or any combination of them. You can put vitamin C directly on the spot by dissolving sodium ascorbate in a small amount of water and painting it on. You can cover the spot with zinc oxide ointment, which is what was used before modern sunscreens, or you can give the dog very high doses of Vitamin D daily.
