paw pandages and ointment?

kgroves May 02, 2007 01:53 PM

We've been trying to gradually ease our 3 yr. old Aussie into longer distance running. The pads on his paws have become cracked, and he's been licking them excessively. Now they've become raw. We've taken him to the vet for this before, and they just put bandages on him (which he promtly chews off). We've been putting bandages on him again (but he chews them off). I've put new toys out for him to chew, but with my husband and myself being gone during the day for work, the pads are not getting any better

2 questions:

Does anyone know how to get a dog to not chew off their bandages?

Would using some first aid ointment like Neosporin be OK to use? If he licks it, is it safe enough?

Thanks!

I have no experience with this but have you tried putting some type of socks on the feet? They might stay on better than a bandage.

OK, I misspelled "bandages" in my original post. Sorry. It annoys me, but I can't find a way to "edit."

I've been doing more research, and a few websites say spraying Bitter Apple spray works for keeping dogs from chewing off their bandages. It also said it "works great on wounds."

Has anyone else had any experiences with this? Does it work? If it's bitter, won't it sting my pup's raw paws?
