My dog WHINES for NO reason....!!!!

knottydread May 02, 2007 02:54 PM

So, I have a coconut retriever mix that was from the carribean. She is 9 months old and is constantly whining. This is not to go eliminate either because she gets walked and ran around plenty! She wakes up at 7 in the morning every morning, which I don't mind, but then continues to whine and whine after she eliminates if no one plays with her etc... I have 2 other dogs and they sleep in and get upset when she whines...

I have tried everything, she has no problem being crated during the day while I'm at school/work but hates it at night and will whine till we let her out just cause she knows we are there. I live in an apartment so ignoring her is not feasible.

What else can I do,,, really? My girlfriend wants me to get her voice box cut and I know this is not the answer.. It almost seems like nothing makes her happy...

One of the things I would Suggest is Before you settle down for the night Take her for the longest walk and make her tired, Also if she's in the Crate ALL Day it's possible that she Jsut Doesnt' want to be in there all the time not only that but it's mean to Crate 24/7

Does she stop whinning if you play with her for a while? I wouldn't crate in the evening if she's crated during the day. I'd probably set up scheduled play times and then give her a stuffed Kong or toys she can play with on her own for other times.

She isn't in the crate all the time..

She wakes up at around 7, I take her out to eliminate, then she comes back in and plays with my other dog for about an hour while I get ready and stuff.. Then she will be fine and goes straight in her cage like she's supposed to and WON'T whine when no one is here, (no neighbor complaints), then I will come home for lunch take them all out, she goes back in willingly, we have a routine...

But then come 5 or so when I come back, I take them all out 1 by 1 to eliminate and when the other dogs are settling down she just whines, my girlfriend said she is whining just to hear her whine, we ignore her and she MIGHT settle down but will probably just keep whining...

Just today while studying for finals I am locked in my bedroom while the other 3 dogs are running around, she is whining and whining as if she's bored or something and is pissed I'm not playing with her... I don't think its separation anxiety because she does fine when no one is home...

I just can't deal with the whining for no reason anymore...

She gets plenty of exercise and there is no way a 9 month old should have to go outside twice in 1 hour..

I've read everywhere on the internet to just keep ignoring them and it will teach them that it's not always play time, but its just not working, looking for alternative suggestions...

The main reason I picked her up was that my mom was taking care of her and put a shock collar on her and put her in a crate for most of the day,,, She has a much better life where she is no with no shock collar and she is barely in a crate, only when no one is here, but it almost seems like she's unhappy and constantly whines..

Will she play with toys on her own? My dog likes squeak toys and chew toys and will sometimes play on her own. A long game of fetch might tire your dog out too. My dog has an I-Qube, which is a soft box that has squeak balls in it. She figures out how to get the balls out by herself, which helps engage her mind.
