Possible Lyme Disease?

carmeny May 02, 2007 04:40 PM

Tick season is upon us early in Saskatchewan! I have removed approximately 30 from my 7 dogs already. Yesterday I applied the Tick ointment between shoulder blades and by the tails. I had removed a couple of ticks from my little dog, Bear, (pom-terrier cross 5 years old) a few days ago. One on his chest closer to his right front leg, left a small bump. He is a very active, fiesty little guy but today he was having difficulty walking - he seemed to be favoring his right front leg a little. He whined a little when walking. He usually comes when I call him but today he would just sit and look at me and shake a little. I picked him up and examined his paws (in between his toes) and moved the legs back and forth. He didn't appear to mind this examination - I checked for lacerations or anything that he could have stepped on and found nothing. He is laying around alot more. I was reading a little about Lyme Disease and limping and lethargy are signs of this. I am wondering if the symptoms could should up so soon. I am giving him until tomorrow morning at which time if there is no improvement or if it worsens he will be going to my vet. Has anyone had an animal test positive for Lyme? Maybe I am overreacting but i get worried when there is a sudden change of behavior. Thank you!

Are your dogs current on their Lyme vaccinations?

Everything I've read says that if you suspect Lyme disease, you should get it looked at as soon as possible.

I hope your little pup gets better!

bear has definitely improved! his eating was always ok and his drinking. i am thinking he might have had a tussel with one of his brothers or sisters - he is still limping but very seldom. he is back to his fiesty self! i am phoning the vet today to see if they were vaccinated for lyme disease as i am unsure - thank you for suggesting that! their vaccinations are current but i don't know if my vet includes that one - but i will definitely check it out!

Now WE'VE got tick problems.

Today my husband and I noticed a little red spot on Riley's bare tummy. We looked closer and saw that it was a bright red ring around a white circle. Thankfully, I recognized this as possibly being the bullseye rash. Then, we noticed a second rash about 4 inches away. He's been acting fine, but I'm really hoping tomorrow morning comes soon so I can bring him in to the vet.

We live in S-central WI, and the ticks have been terrible this year! We've been using Frontline and he's updated on his Lyme vaccination (although now I'm all confused about THAT after reading other posts).

Does anyone know if the 2 rashes necessarily mean 2 bites? Riley's an Aussie, and it's never easy to find ticks in his fur, but I can't believe that we didn't see them on his bare belly. I mean, we spend probably 30 minutes every day looking him over.
