Ever heard of this?

sarasmushu May 02, 2007 06:13 PM

OK so My Lab is afraid of everything getting better but little Things freak him out. ex. if a Bag is laying on the floor in the living room and he didn't see it go there he won't go in the room with it. he has gotten better with the use of "touch it"

SO yesterday I was at the Hardware store with him waiting for my ride and people where walking out and most just commented on how handsome he is. and everyone seemed to understand he's not a people dog. HowEver you always run into those people that want to offer advice. Bently was Standing there with his Tail tucked. which is a GREAT improvement to turning and running down the Street to get away from the Scarry.
Anyhoo This lady Proceded to tell me that she was watching Ceasar Millan, Which offically turned me off I want nothing to do with the dog whisper. I did Give her my opnion on him Just to scare her off so she wouldn't tell me what he would do. it didn't work

She told me that When he gets Scared and tucks his tail. I should Lift his tail up. anyone ever heard of that?

Needless to say I wouldn't do it as he just had 2 major tail operations so Touching his tail isn't an option I want ot play with in the first place.

I don't watch the dog whisperer, but I have--gently--lifted my dog's tail when she put it down. (I wouldn't--like you--do it when my dog just had surgery. . .) Did the woman say what lifting the tail was supposed to do? I wouldn't do it if my dog was terrified, but I've done it when she's being cautious, and just said, "Where's your happy tail?" She then calms down a little, probably because of the interaction/distraction. I doubt it would work with a truly scared dog, but I don't know.

She didn't Say WHAT it was supose to do by doing it. if she had given me a reason I dont' think it would have bugged me so much!!!

It's odd that someone would give advice without an explanation, but my sense is that people who watch Milan and quote him constantly think he's right about everything--without question.

Yeah, if I had a quarter for every time someone told me how Ceasar Milan would "fix" my Kita girl, I'd be rich. I wouldn't let my girl even near that man even if I was paid to. The damage he could do to her!

As for the holding the tail up- I think I saw the episode and the theory was to get the dog to look unafraid so he'd feel unafraid. Kind of like a person holding their head up high when they are nervous. It's a mental game.

It may work on some dogs, but next time you get "advice" from a Cesar Milan expert, quote them the disclaimer on the bottom of the screen, "These methods shoudl not be attempted without first consulting an expert trainer."
