lifespan of american bulldogs

bigry May 08, 2007 08:13 PM

I have a friend that has had two english bulldogs and they both died in less then ten years. I was wondering if this was common in bulldog breeds. Also i was looking on a breeders site and they have a foundation page where they talk about retired dogs and ones that have passed away and it seemed that they said they lost the dogs early in a few cases.

Yes this is very common to the breed. The average lifespan can be about 8-10 years and many will die earlier than that. This breed can have a myriad of health problems.

Seeing as it is a larger breed dog, you are looking at 10-12 years max. I currently have a 6 year old male here. The oldest I know of is 14 years old. You will see a shorter lifespan with a johnson due to size more often, however that is not to say that every scott will live longer.

If you are going with a breeder ask what health issues are passed down. A lot of time severe arthritis is a big factor in early death. With my AB, we are positive that will be what takes him from us.

We have a Ten yr old and he still acts like a pup. But he has good hips Penn 32 32 and Ofa good. And I have a spayed female that's 9 years old and she still gets around good and she was diagnosed with DJD at the age of 10 months. But I agree about the Johnson dogs. And I've heard of a few Old Whites and hyprids getting up to 14-15. Not alot.
