Post Neutering Behaviour - Normal?

ALIKI May 13, 2007 07:38 AM

Greetings - my dog Primo, a toy poodle, was neutered on Thursday, he came home that night. He had a small bite to eat that night, did not pee or pooh, and slept most of the night away. Friday it was more of the same - he ate and drank water but he did not pee or pooh on his pee pad, I took him out in the afternoon and he took one long pee. However when we walks, he takes a few steps and sits down real quick, he does this continiously - is this normal? On Saturday morning I took him out and he continued taking a few steps and sitting down again and again, he finally peed and then took a small pooh. Throughout Saturday, which was spent sleeping for the most part, he wouldn't pee on his pee pad, I tried to cajole him to pee but when I approached him on his pee pad he would scramble to get away. He finally peed on his pee pad last night, but the walking/sitting behaviour continues, it almost seems like he is uncomfortable when he walks - could it be the stitches? Is this normal behaviour? He is not wearing the cone as he seldom tries to lick himself. And about the sleeping - is it normal that he is sleeping so much? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Most dogs react differently to the effects of anesthesia, some bounce back quickly and others can take a day or two or more which might be the case for a toy breed. As for the walking and sitting, there could be a little pull of a stitch or two somewhere or it could be he just knows he doesn't feel comfortable back there. From what you have mentioned it seems pretty typical behavior but if it persists into this coming week you may want to mention it to your vet.

Our toy hasn't been neutered yet but the walking a couple of steps and then sitting quickly is pretty common after we clip him. When we clip the hair really short on his tail, it usually irritates him for a day or two and he'll do this. My guess is that as mentioned above, the stitches are just irritating him.
