New Standard Poodle potty training tips

JakesWorld May 14, 2007 06:46 PM

Hi All,
I just rescued a Standard about a year old and he has been crated for weeks I was told. We are in the process of trying to potty train him. When we take him out, walk just outside, doesn't matter he will not go. When we come back in the house he tries to find a place to go and we are frantically trying to get him back out to go, sometimes not very successful. We have tried the old wait it out and see if he gets the hint but so far he can out wait us by a mile. We have 2 other dogs that have been easy to train, but so far he does not get the hint. We have to keep a keen eye on him so far to prevent disasters, also we have had him for less than a week, are we just too impatient? He is an awesome guy other than that.

Any Tips

Thanks,

First... congratulations on adopting a rescue... I thank you for that. One thing I would suggest if you haven't tried it already is to take him for a long walk with your other two dogs. That might stimulate his natural urge to relieve himself outside. Since you have only had him for a week, it might take a little more time. He's probably a little stressed and disoriented with his new surroundings.

Thanks for your response. Hopefully time and love will get him on the right track.

Awwwwww, bless you for rescuing this dog. Since he was crated for so long, he probably got use to going in his crate. It may take a little longer to train him. It might help to take him where the other dogs go if they have a special spot. Also have some treats handy just in case he does go. If he does praise him and give him a treat. Does he go on papers in his crate? If he does, you might want to bring one of those papers outside for a time and then eventually do away with the papers. I think considering the fact that he's been crated for a long time, it most likely will take you a little longer to train him that it did your other dogs. Don't give up....the light will go on in his head! Keep the praise and treats coming for a time and eventually you won't need them. Good luck to you and come back and let us know you he's doing.

Thanks for your response, we have tried walking him with the other dogs, the problem is also we are having to leash train him too and he is a little skiddish, so when we do walk him he is so nervous that he doesn't even smell around much. Funny thing, when I am scared it makes me have to pee.... I belive we just have to re-assure him and give plenty of praise and hopefully he will get the hint.

I will keep you posted.

P.S. Our other 2 dogs are rescued also, a Toy Poodle and a Greyhound.
