jackson_hazle_patch May 23, 2007 04:31 PM

Hi! i have an Australian Shepherd with the best dispostion. I want to breed him but i dont think he's ready. He's only a year old and still little. Ever since i got him my friends and parents have be on my case of breeding him, even my vet wants me too! He has exceeded in agility and he has the longest bloodline of champions. I wanted to neuter him but Lynn (my father) didnt want the bloodline to stop with him (he was an only child). They feel it would be nice to breed him but i dont know what the expectations are. Sorry for my spelling. Should he be a certain age? Please help!!!

A 1 year old should not be competing in agility nor is he ready to breed. 2 years old is the minimum age to get health clearances for breeding.

I recommend going to the Australian Shepherd Club of America and finding a mentor who can assess the great points about your dog and some of the weaknesses. Show your dog in ASCA comformation classes to see how he measures up against other aussies. There's no rush to breed a decent dog.

He's not competeing in agility! I meant that he is doing very well in his agility training. Sorry if i didnt put it in clear enough.

Now he is the most perfect pup and he is great with other people and kids and he is a great familiy dog. But there is one problem with him. He HATES other dog, because when hes was 3 months he got attacked my two of my next door neighbors dogs, ever since hes hated other dogs. And i hope this doesnt mess with me breeding him out. We have a second dog thats a german shepherd mix and he does just fine with him and if he's with our dog he is fine but when he's by himself he is just plan mean! We try to get him out to meet other dogs but its not going well.

And we even attened a dog obedience class. He passed! but he made sure that he wasnt close to other dogs. It was a 7 week class and he was doing good, but when other dogs come to play with him he shows his teeth. We dont know if he's protecting me or if he's just scared!

Please help me! I dont want him scared the rest of his life!

hello,
I know I'm late on this topic, but when I saw it I had to reply.
Please do not breed your aussie.
If you care about this breed at all, don't do it.
Wait till he's 2, get him OFA'd. Do a pedigree search and make sure NO epilepsy runs in his lines or as little as possible.
Have him get a CERF. and do you know if cancer or auto immune disorder is in his lines?
Then if you want to breed make sure whoever you pick to breed to has done the same with their dog.
Is he bettering the line or the breed by your breeding him?
Has he or will he get any titles? Working? Showing? Agility? Flyball?
Please think this over very carefully.
