Just got a Mal.

ayobreezie Jun 02, 2007 08:15 AM

Well, we just got a Mal puppy as a new addition to the family. At the moment, we have a 5 month old Corgi, and the Mal is 4 months. He's beautiful. With them both being males, I'm wondering if this is a good combination. The Corgi is semi-aggressive with food. I've been wanting to feed them seperately in their kennels, but my wife has been insisting on feeding them together. But I'm pretty sure it'd be safer and they'd both end up happier. Well, I'll try to post a picture up soon. Both seem to be doing good right now, but it's only been a day or so.. so, we'll see how it goes...

Congrats on your getting a Mal. My neighbor has one and he is a beautiful dog. You are right about feeding them seperately... for now... especially if the Corgi has a little food aggression. It would be best to feed them both in their crates for a couple of weeks then bring the food to the outside of the crates and then slowly bring them together if that is your goal. With both dogs being so young I don't think the male/male combination will be to much of an issue though with my breed the Shiba Inu they recommend a male/female. When it's time have them both neutered to head off any possible posturing. The Corgi being a herding dog may end up as the Alpha dog even though the Mal will end up being a much larger dog. If you need some help posting pictures let us know. I would love to see your pups. Well, here's some pictures of the 2. They're not together because the Corgi doesn't stay still long enough for a good photo.. heh.

Great pictures! Thanks for posting them... they are great looking pups. What are their names? Your Mal is the same color as my neighbors Mal and they call him Dusty. I can understand your not getting good picts of your Corgi... seems I always get good butt shots of my own three! lol

The Mal we named Grimmjaw Jaggerjack. And our Corgi is named Professor Einstein. Heh. Love 'em to death.. just trouble trying to rid the Mal of the shyness he has.. because I'm guessing he was never really socialized around humans well. And other dogs either. So, he's always spooked. And he's scared of us, his new parents, but takes to Einstein pretty well.

Chris that's good if he's taken to Einstein. So what do you call Grimmjaw Jaggerjack for short? lol Is there some significance to that name? I'm willing to bet that in the next week or two you will see him come and more out his shell. A move and change in environment and surrounding can be very traumatic for a dog no matter what age they are. Once he becomes more familiar with the new sounds and new routines and the care he will recieve he'll be bouncing around in no time.

Heh.. well, we just call him Grimmjaw. I told my wife to just call him Jack, but she said no, his name is Grimmjaw! Heh.. well, I've found a Malamute forum to post in, and so far they've told me to hand feed him and just don't pay attention to him.. and go about our daily routines. And he'll get curious and come around... and once he gets used to the surroundings and things he should start coming around more. But he's really good. I really want to groom him, but I'd rather he get used to us first. And I think I may start handfeeding Einstein also.. both of them get along well, but the only thing is they growl at eachother when it comes to food or treats.. so, I always have to put one behind me when I give one of them a treat.. usually Einstein because he likes to run up and grab treats from my hand.

Ohh, we got the name from a Japanese animation that my wife watches, called Bleach.

Glad to see you go a new puppy.
I have a very large siberian husky that people keep asking in person if hes a malamute (falls into the breed standard by weight, size and build), and a mix breed puppy that is siberian husky(has the merle gene for the blue eyes, and some other features), possibly white shepard(has the shape and long legs, long ears), and malmaute (has the facial pattern, the voice of the mal), hes only 10.5 months old and 77 lbs.
If you teach both that you are in charge of the food, and that you control it, you can feed both together, but you must be right there, you must be ready to jump in and show them both that you control who eats what and how much. They will enjoy it more if you set boundaries such as that. I fed my 2 separate for a while, then as the puppy got closer in size to the sibe I started to feed both together, they are a pack, they eat together, they go to the potty together, they walk together, hike, etc.
They are born knowing what their position will be (at least among dogs) and it will come out (or start to show) at about 1-2 years old. Some show earlier in life and some come out of their shell a bit later. Some will accept a lower ranking position until either weakness allows for them to move up, or a death, etc.
Hope to see you dogs pictured soon.
