My raw method ard collard greens

julierose Jun 09, 2007 03:25 PM

I have been raw feeding my pit mix pups since January. For the most part, I follow Billinghurst's method of giving them both raw meaty bones and veggies mixed with protein. I alternate between the two types of meals: a veggie mash day, a meaty bone day, 2 meals each day to break up the variety even further. Meaty bones are mostly chicken backs, with some meals of turkey wings, or legs, or pork or beef neck bones. Veggies are pulped in a juicer (a whole variety including kale, broccoli, lettuce, squash, apples, carrots, cabbage, peppers, etc.) and portions are frozen, then thawed when needed. The protein mix-ins are mainly ground chicken leg quarters, sometimes ground beef or pork, raw egg, mackerel, sardines, organ meats (liver and heart from beef or chicken) and occasionally oatmeal, given in equal portions to the veggies. I supplement with kelp, vitamins C, E, B-complex, flax seed, cod liver and sometimes canola oil . They are now 14 months old and thriving.

BUT, I have never given them collard greens. Is there any reason why I shouldn't? Billinghurst writes that cabbage family veggies, given over a long term, can depress thyroid function. Should I be concerned, considering that I already include kale, broccoli and cabbage as part of the mix already? These never total more than 1/2 the amount in any veggie mix but I was hoping wiser heads could advise me...

Thanks

if it were me I would probably err on the side of caution...if you want to feed collard greens maybe just leave out on of the others. But that's just my opinion.
