adoped gsp has breast lumps

cattledog5 Jun 22, 2007 10:07 AM

Hello. I just adopted a 4 year old female gsp from a rescue organization two days ago. I took her to my vet yesterday for an examination and it turns out she has three small breast lumps. She was spayed after her first litter. She is a really pleasnt and well trained dog, so I haven't decided yet if I will keep her or not. Does anybody have an idea of what her chances might be? or any advice? thank you very much.

I'm thinking that a thorough examination should be done about the breast lumps before deciding what to do with the dog. What was your vet's initial determination? If you returned the dog the chances of her being adopted again would likely be small. There is always the inherent risks involved but the lumps may also turn out to not be serious.

I don't have any first hand experience with breast lumps, but I have a dog with lumps that show up on occation.

I have the lumps tested with a needle biopsy (easily done in clinic by most vets) and thankfully have never had to make any tough decisions.

I know I would not put a dog through chemotherapy. I've see it done and the "cure" seems worse than the disease with a pet. They just don't understand. Yet, I'd have the lump removed and go from there.

So, I really don't know what to tell you, but I know giving a loving dog a home is a priceless experience- no matter how long that time ends up being.
