flea bite dermatitis

anneh Jun 24, 2007 04:00 PM

I adopted a dog that apparently has this due to neglect. He came to me with raw skin in areas and a few fleas (I bathed him in a Neem shampoo to kill fleas on him and hopefully got them all and now he is in a new flea free environment plus I use an essential oil flea repellent spray ). I was told he must have monthly Frontline to prevent re-occurrence. Would adding fresh crushed garlic and nutritional yeast (btw are plain B complex vitamins better than nutritional yeast?)help deter them instead? I feed my other dog a raw diet (he has never had fleas and I hope I haven't put him in danger of getting them from this dog) but for now he is on California Natural until I switch over gradually to raw. Also, what should I put on the itching skin areas? Thank you
anne

Brewers yeast and fresh garlic are very good at repelling fleas from a dog, probably by providing nutrients that are otherwise hard to get, thus making the dog healthier overall. If this works for your dog, there is no need for Frontline. Brewers yeast consists of more than just B-vitamins. For the current raw spots, dab on diluted calendula tincture made by adding a few drops of calendula tincture to a wet cotton ball. Dab this on 3 times a day.
