Old chihuahua with pica

kumachan Jun 25, 2007 12:04 PM

Hi Dr. Tobin, you may recall Mugsy, a geriatric chihuahua with 1 kidney.

I hadn't been in touch w/you recently because I finally found a holistic vet on Long Island who's been treating my dogs, but Mugsy's having some problems and I hope you can give me your opinion.

Mugsy had some dental work done about 2 months ago. His jaw was riddled with infection but healed nicely due to good supplements from our vet. But after his dental work, we started to notice that on his walks, he'd eat whatever he could find. Rocks, rubber bands, anything. Our vet said he had pica and gave us a homeopathic remedy (sorry don't have the name on me), but I feel it made it worse and I stopped the remedy. Meanwhile, the pica has gotten unbearable, and we stopped walking him until we get a muzzel.

Can you recommend anything?

try him on a diet of fresh meat and bones, and give him leftovers and table scraps. He is eating other things because some nutrient is missing from his diet.
